The status of your favorite shows for the rest of the 2024-2025 TV season is a regular point of interest for fans. As new series arrive and others conclude, we see which TV shows get renewed or canceled. Welcome to the wild world of big surprises (and a few not-so-good ones) in this year’s TV renewals and cancellations.
Renewed Shows: What’s Coming Back in 2024-2025?
Fans can breathe easy once again as a number of their favorite series are returning with new seasons. Take “Stranger Things,” one of Netflix’s biggest hits, for instance; the show is confirmed to have a fifth season. It will be the final season, but fans are delighted that the story will get its worthy climactic finale. Or, in the meantime, “Ted Lasso“, the wildly popular Apple TV+ comedy, is coming back for another season after a very successful run.
Other renewals on network TV include “NCIS,” “Grey’s Anatomy“ and “The Good Doctor.” Their viewers preserve it in the primetime lineup, which teaches continuous top evaluations. Fans were also given some good news, as streaming services renewed some fan favorites. We also got the upcoming sixth season of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale“ and the renewal for Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” fourth season.
Canceled Shows: Which Ones Are Saying Goodbye?
Every TV season, there are some unfortunate cancellations. One of this year’s biggest surprises is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel“ ending on Prime Video. The show concluded with a highly praised season, making its cancellation bittersweet yet unsurprising. “The Mandalorian“ also is a significant departure, which will end with its new season. Fans have long speculated about the future of the “Star Wars“ universe on TV, but it looks like Mandalorian will end its journey in 2025.
In cancelation – NBC has pulled the plug on “La Brea,” a show that did well out of the box. Even though the show starred a family stuck in another dimension, it never caught on for long. And over on The CW, after nine seasons, “The Flash” will come to an end, signaling the close of what was once a flagship comic book drama in the Arrowverse.
The Streaming Platform Shake-Up
Just like every 2024-2025, streaming services are constantly changing their lineups. Netflix had a reputation for canceling high-profile shows. Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel became the subject of “The Sandman,” which was met with lukewarm reviews, generating an announcement from the platform that it would be canceled after one season. In a similar vein, another fan-favorite series, “The Midnight Club,” was also canceled, and it too had a huge group of supporters pushing for season two.
Disney+, in between arrowing on things like “Loki,” has also canceled certain series. Live-action “Little Mermaid” was canceled after performing poorly. Marvel spin-off show “Secret Invasion” fumbled the ball, which led to its cancellation after just one season.
What’s Next for TV?
There are a lot of factors that determine what happens to your favorite series. Show viewership numbers, critical reception, and the fan base all determine whether a show gets canceled or renewed. Traditional TV networks, once considered the least likely to change, are now being forced into action as streaming platforms gain ground. ABC, NBC, and CBS are investing more in digital content to reach a younger audience.
Streaming outlets, however, have dutifully developed a reputation for cutting tracks after one season. This can have a bummer effect on fans, but it’s allowed more creative freedom and risk with storytelling.
More shows will reveal if they’re coming back for more seasons or getting canceled in the months to come. Check the headlines in the coming weeks and months to follow the fate of your favorite series in 2024 and beyond.
