Located on an island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island (aka “The Rock”) is certainly a notorious federal prison with much historical significance. It sits approximately 1.25 miles from the coast. Drawn in by its dense history and distinctive makeup, the island sees millions of tourists each year. The island offers spectacular views of the San Francisco sky and the picturesque Golden Gate Bridge.
Early History of Alcatraz
Prior to the Europeans taking over the Land, Alcatraz served as a port of food for Native American people. The island was mapped by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775, and he named it “La Isla de los Alcatraces,” which means “Island of the Pelicans.” After California became part of the United States, the U.S. military took control of the island in 1848.
Military Fortifications
In the 1850s, the United States government converted a military fort into a coastal defense installation, finishing the project in 1859. It was an artillery base to defend San Francisco against a naval assault. During the Civil War, the military used Alcatraz as a prison. It housed Confederate sympathizers and Union deserters.
The Federal Prison Era
It became a federal prison in 1934, controlled by the U.S. government. This change was to house the most violent men of our generation. The detention center was soon infamous for its strict regulations and dire facilities. The Alcatraz Island prison was home to some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz”.
Prison Life
The process of daily life at Alcatraz was uncompromising and challenging. Daily life inside the prison was well-regimented. They slept on cotton bedding and woke up early but still had 12-hour breaks for the next day; they worked while it was light outside, a recommended practice that has no basis in natural science. The ruin held prisoners starting from 300. Solitary confinement was the most severe form of punishment by which discipline was maintained in guarded workhouses.
Failed Escape Attempts
Escape attempts made Alcatraz legendary. Unsurprisingly, in such harsh surroundings and isolation, the harsh conditions decreased most prisoners’ view of freedom. This became legendary after Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers escaped in 1962.” Using rafts made from raincoats, they drilled through the walls of their cells. It is still unclear what happened to them, and they are thought to have drowned in the bay.
The Island Today
Alcatraz began to deteriorate after the prison was shut down in 1963. National Park Service acquired it in the 1970s. The book was an immediate bestseller, and the site drew tourists from all over the world. It now presents guided tours and historic exhibitions on the business.
Cultural Impact
Alcatraz has an immense influence on American culture. It comes up in many movies, books, and songs. Its reputation was infamous, highlighted in films like “Escape from Alcatraz.” All of these depictions help build the mystique and allure of the island.
Native American Occupation
A branch of Native American activists took over Alcatraz in 1969. They wanted to take back the island and bring focus to their problems. The occupation lasted 19 months and received national media attention. A demonstration from this event emphasized both the rights of Native Americans and their sovereignty.
Preservation Efforts
Today, preservation efforts concentrate on preserving Alcatraz as it was historically. Rebuilding and communicating with visitors regarding history work much–mainly when the National Park Service is two years into 25-year plans for buildings everywhere on the grounds. Their goal is to pass down the island’s history to those in the generations that followed.
Wildlife and Environment
Alcatraz Island, on the other hand, is an island refuge for all hosts of wildlife. It attracts birdwatchers to observe the nesting seabirds. The island’s natural charm unselfconsciously compliments the organic growth around the historic structures.
